A Sample Writing

Last month in my blog article entitled, “What Are You Working On?”, I shared with you my writing project for the year.  To give you a better understanding about what I am doing exactly, I decided to share with you one of my writings.  I hope you enjoy it.

Today’s subject is about Biographies

Biographies can be a very useful tool in your development as a creative.  Whether you are a photographer, sculptor, writer, artist, etc., reading biographies, autobiographies or even obituaries gives you a glimpse into the life of a successful person.  Not simply for star gazing but to understand their mindset and their path to success.  How did they get from A to B?

The interesting thing about biographies is that you can learn something very valuable from people even when they do not share your same interests or passions.  Anyone who has achieved something important, who survived a disaster or started a successful business in their garage has something of value to share.  We can learn a great deal from others if we are open-minded.

It is important to understand that while you are learning a great deal about the individual in the biography, this is really just a small part of the many minutes, days and years of the life they lived or have lived so far.  We will never know every thought that milled around in their mind. A biography is like a Cliff note of a life.

When you read biographies, you will come across individuals who inspire you, help you find a solution to a problem you are currently working through or they will show you the tools and strategies they used to succeed.  You may not agree with everything they say or do but it is important to remain open-minded.  Take what you like and leave the rest.

Even if your idol has fallen from their pedestal, you can still learn from other people’s mistakes and failures.  No one is perfect.  Their story may save you a great deal of time, may help you save a relationship or motivate you to change your life without having to make the same mistakes.

When you are searching for biographies, begin with people you admire in your area of interest, ask others for recommendations, visit you local library, take a look at Amazon’s recommendation “100 Biographies and Memoirs to Read in a Lifetime.”  My personal favourite is by Elie Wiesel entitled “Night”.  I read this book several years ago and I will never forget what I learned about the will to survive.
